Removing nail polish safely and cleanly can also be done at home with simple tools.
Here are tips for cleaning your own nail polish at home based on recommendations from the Association of Dermatologists and Venereologists.
- Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to each cuticle and surrounding skin to protect the skin from exposure to the acetone.
- Prepare a piece of cotton that has been soaked in acetone before according to the size of each nail. This is of course to avoid the risk of skin contact with acetone.
- Place a piece of acetone cotton on the surface. If necessary, wrap your nails with plastic wrap for 10 minutes, and avoid wrapping too tightly.
- Remove nail polish gently with a warm towel. Avoid rubbing it too hard and don't touch the skin around it.
- Wash your hands and feet using running water and mild soap to remove any remaining acetone. Dry using a towel.
- Apply a moisturizer, for example with petroleum jelly. Gently apply moisturizer to the cuticles and skin around the nails for at least 7 days to prevent the risk of irritation due to acetone.
Keep in mind, you must be careful when using acetone. Quoted from Alodokter, acetone or propanone is a chemical liquid that is highly volatile, colorless, and easily flammable when exposed to fire.
While using it to remove nail polish, try not to get it on your skin. Acetone can cause irritation to the skin which causes redness, dryness, and cracks.
If you continue to be exposed to acetone, it is recommended to immediately wash the affected skin area for 10–15 minutes with running water and apply a moisturizer to prevent the skin from drying out.
Apart from removing nail polish, this liquid is also used as a solvent for paint, wax, resin, plastic, and glue. In the textile industry sector, acetone is also used as an admixture to remove gum from silk and fat from wool.
