- When it finishes loading, click Utilities then open Terminal
- Type the following command then enter: reset password
- Select the volume / hard disk and the account whose password you want to reset
- Restart the machine
SECOND WAY: RESET PASSWORD FROM SINGLE-USER MODE
- Hold down Command + S while turning on the Mac (just after pressing the power button)
- Type the following command then enter: fsck -fy
- Type the following command then enter: mount -uw /
- Type the following command then enter: load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist Note: For OS 10.6 and earlier, step number 4 is the following command: load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
- Type the following command then enter: ls /Users
(Note: the command in step 5 is lowercase LS, not is. Its function is to see the username you want to reset) - Type the following command then enter: passwd usernam
(Note: username is the one obtained in step 5) - The password has been reset, please restart by typing the following command then enter: reboot
THIRD WAY: CREATE A NEW ADMIN ACCOUNT
- Hold down Command + S while turning on the Mac (just after pressing the power button)
- Type the following command then enter: mount -uw /
- Type the following command then enter: rm /var.db/.AppleSetupDone
- Restart the Mac, enter the following command then enter: reboot
- When the Mac starts up again, there will be steps to create a new admin user, enter data as desired
