TheIndonesia.id - Tech giant Amazon launched the Asia Pacific region for its subsidiary Amazon Web Services, or AWS, located in Jakarta.
Vice president of infrastructure services at AWS Prasad Kalyanaraman announced the launch on Tuesday, December 15, and said the new region aims to boost the businesses of their customers as well as national economic development.
“AWS is excited to announce our new region in Asia Pacific and help Indonesian institutions, innovative startups, and world-leading companies deliver cloud-powered applications to fuel economic development across the country. Organizations across industries in Indonesia can now take advantage of the AWS Asia Pacific (Jakarta) Region to lower costs, increase agility, and drive innovation,” Kalyanaraman stated.
AWS provides cloud computing platforms for individuals, companies, and governments, and among some of their biggest customers in Indonesia are lifestyle app Traveloka, health app Halodoc, and e-commerce unicorn Tokopedia.
AWS now has 84 availability zone across 26 geographic regions, and it has announced plans to launch 24 more availability zones and eight AWS regions in Australia, Canada, India, Israel, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates.
AWS regions includes availability zones that place infrastructure in separate and distinct geographic locations. Availability zones are located far enough from each other to support customers’ business continuity but near enough to provide low latency for high availability applications that use multiple availability zones.
AWS said in the next 15 years, it expected to invest more than US$5 billion in the newly-launched Asia Pacific region. It aims to use the planned funding for the construction of data centers, operational expenses related to ongoing utilities and facility costs, as well as purchases of goods and services from regional businesses.
The company also predicted 24,700 new job opportunities in construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications sectors – among others.
AWS also estimated the construction and operation of AWS infrastructure in Indonesia to add over US$10 billion to Indonesia’s GDP over the next 15 years.
