Indonesia, South Korea Will Sign MoU on Seafarer Placement, Protection

TheIndonesia.id - Indonesian Ministry of Manpower continues to formulate an agreement with South Korea on the placement and protection of Indonesian migrant workers, particularly in fisheries, to the East Asian country.

The Ministry continues to discuss bilateral cooperation on seafarer placement with South Korea’s Ministry of Employment and Labor as well as Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and they are set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the matter later in May this year.

The MoU will focus on cooperation in labor and labor relations sectors for seafarers working on Korean-flagged fishing vessels.

“Cooperation regulated in the MoU is under G to G scheme on the placement and protection of Indonesian seafarers in the Republic of Korea under Foreign Seafarer System,” Indonesia’s Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah said on Wednesday, March 23, as reported by Antara.

She also said the bilateral discussion is an attempt to resolve unemployment issues in Indonesia and to empower working-age population in the country.

“The plan related to the expansion of job opportunities for professional in formal sectors to the Republic of Korea is the government’s effort to lower unemployment rate and improve the empowerment of productive workforce,” Fauziyah.

According to her, the Ministry is in the process of developing an app that will allow the process of migrant placement abroad to be done online, especially for countries who already have relevant MoU with Indonesia.

The system is expected to collect and provide more accurate data that can be used to assist authorities in monitoring Indonesian migrant workers.
