TheIndonesia.id - The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy said Indonesia is currently in the process of building an “accurate” database for people with disabilities to enable better access to services.
Effendy said building a strong database will allow the government to map out the problems that hinder it from optimally serving people with disabilities in Indonesia, and it aims to create one to ensure better access for the group.
“Data collection on disability is the primary key to identify and overcome obstacles faced by people with disabilities to access their rights,” the coordinating minister said on Wednesday, June 29, as reported by Antara.
He added the database will be a reference for the formulation and implementation of regulations and policies that seek to accelerate inclusive development for people with disabilities.
“The respect, protection, and fulfillment of their rights must become a focus,” Effendy stated.
According to him, currently, such data is still limited and different in various institutions because data collection is based on each institution’s programs and functions.
As mandated by Law No. 8/2016 on persons with disabilities, the Indonesian government is committed to build a regulation for data collection for disability through national data collection, disaggregated data, and the completion of population administration for people with disabilities.
Effendi said to realize the vision, ministries and agencies must synergize with the public to collectively build an accurate database that contains detailed information about the estimated 22 million of people with disabilities in Indonesia.
