TheIndonesia.id - A non-government organization (NGO) has recently called for more commitment from the Indonesian government on the prevention and handling of trafficking in persons (TIP) that continues to be a serious problem in many regions in the country.
During a meeting with members of Commission IX of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, July 5, Migrant Care said collaboration between institutions and stakeholders can still be strengthened because TIP is still rife, and many Indonesian migrant workers continue to be the victims of this crime.
Migrant Care’s representative Anis Hidayah called TIP a complex issue because it revolves around human rights, legal, manpower, and migration issues – among others. Therefore, collaboration between ministries and state agencies will be crucial to put an end to TIP.
“There are still many TIP cases because the preventive measures is done separately, and this needs to be improved in the future,” Hidayah said, as reported by Antara.
Furthermore, she recommended information about TIP prevention to be included in school curriculum because a big number of TIP victims are children and students.
“So it’s important for [the knowledge] to be integrated to school curriculum, whether it’s in formal or non-formal education,” the activist suggested.
Lastly, Migrant Care said the placement of migrant workers abroad is ideally done through different schemes with established and transparent systems, including government-to-government, private-to-private, or government-to-private because official systems and schemes can help prevent nonprocedural placement from taking place.
