KPU Opens Political Parties Registration for 2024 Election, PDI-P Eyes Win

TheIndonesia.id - The General Elections Commission, or KPU, officially kick-started the registration period for political parties to compete in the 2024 legislative election on Monday, August 1, and a number of parties submitted their applications on the first day.

Among the political parties that was seen at KPU’s headquarters today was the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) which eyed its third consecutive win after securing the most seats in parliament (128) during the previous election.

“Of course we won’t be able to stand alone, but a hat-trick is our collective commitment,” PDI-P’s Bambang Wuryanto said on Monday, as reported by Antara.

He also revealed that the registration process went smoothly as the Party’s representatives were welcomed by KPU chairman Hasyim Asy'ari.

The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) also tried to get registered on Monday. Its president Ahmad Syaikhu said it showed the party’s commitment and preparedness to be part of the 2024 election.

“We deliberately register today to show that PKS is ready to compete in the coming 2024 election,” Syaikhu said, adding that PKS had completed all required data and documents to be registered in the system.

In 2019, PKS won 8.21 percent of the total votes and 50 out of 575 seats in parliament.

KPU chairman Asy’ari later confirmed that nine political parties had come to register themselves at KPU’s headquarters on Monday. Aside from the two aforementioned parties, the rest were Justice and Unity Party (PKP), Reform Party, Just and Prosperous People's Party (Prima), Perindo Party, National Democrat (or Nasdem) Party, Crescent Star Party (PBB), and Indonesia Sovereignty Party (Pandai).

“We will look at the completeness of required documents. Afterwards, KPU will issue notice that informs all requirements are met and that [political parties] are registered,” Asy’ari explained.

According to him, the registration will open until August 14.
