TheIndonesia.id - The North Sumatra Water Police arrested a fisherman for trading protected horseshoe crabs in Simpang III, Deli Serdang regency.
IB (35), local fisher from Bagan Deli, Belawan subdistrict, Medan, was arrested by authorities after he was found to be carrying the protected wildlife without any required permits.
“Suspect IB was arrested by officers for carrying the protected horseshoe crabs without having official documents issued by authorities,” spokesperson for North Sumatra Police Grand Commissioner Adjutant Herwansyah confirmed on Monday, August 29, as reported by Antara.
According to him, IB was arrested after water police had received reports from members of the public about an individual who was planning on transporting horseshoe crabs from Bagan to Simpang III in Deli Serdang.
“Personnel then monitored the Bagan Belawan area and found a man carrying 180 horseshoe crabs using a wheelbarrow,” Herwansyah said.
The police revealed that IB collected the animal by using net as trap.
He was taken to the North Sumatra Police headquarters to be investigated and could face up to five years in prison.
