East Nusa Tenggara Warned of Prolonged Drought Amid Long Days Without Rain

TheIndonesia.id - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, has warned people in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) to anticipate “extreme” days without rainfall that will lead to drought in several areas in the province.

Head of Class II Kupang Climatology Station Rahmattulloh Adji warned the public of the impacts of drought after a long streak of days without rain.

“Public need to anticipate the consequences of drought in areas with extremely long days without rain of more than 61 days,” Adji said on Tuesday, September 20, as reported by Antara.

According to him, areas in NTT that experience long days without rainfall include Sumba regency near Melolo, Wanga, Kwangu, Kananggar, Tawui, Rambangaru, Praiwitu, and Kamanggih; Sabu Raijua regency nea sekitar Stamet Tardamu Sabu and Daieko; as well as Rote Ndao regency near Olafuliha'a, Feapopi, and Busalangga.

Amid the increasing risk of drought, the BMKG official warned members of the public to reduce water usage, so it can last during the period.

Local farmers are recommended to turn to plants that don’t need much water, so they can still give good result during harvest in dry season.

The potential of forest and land fire also increases, and Adji warned people against engaging in activities that can trigger fires in open areas.
