Governor Targets 4 Million Jakartans to Use Public Transport by 2030

TheIndonesia.id - Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan has revealed the target to get four million people in the capital to use public transport by 2030, or quadruple the current figure at only one million.

The governor said he is optimistic that the number of individuals that rely on public transport will continue to climb in the coming years as the trend had been positive so far.

“I’m confident that the number of public transport users will continue to increase and meets the target,” Baswedan said on Tuesday, September 27, as reported by Antara.

According to him, the provincial government is not looking at option to make public transport mandatory, but the administration will allocate more incentives to make the system more accessible for the public.

Revitalizing bus stops, stations, and sidewalks are also the focus of Jakarta government, Baswedan said.

“[People will] choose to use public transport not because they are obliged to, but because it is a rational option. Once a choice is considered as a rational one, it can invite more and more users,” he explained.

Based on data from the Jakarta transportation office, the province’s public service obligation’s allocation for public transport in 2019 was Rp 3.1 trillion. And this year, the number rose to around Rp 4 trillion and is allocated for TransJakarta (Rp 3.2 trillion), MRT (Rp 600 billion), and LRT Jakarta (Rp 200 billion).
