However, on the use of this latest technology development, the Press Council of the Republic of Indonesia reminds media practitioners to keep prioritizing the accuracy of journalistic work.
"The media must prioritize the principles of transparency, accuracy, and responsibility. In the digital era, the media must consider the impact of the use of algorithms and artificial intelligence in the reporting process, such as in data collection and information dissemination," said the Press Council Chairperson, Ninik Rahayu in the Local Media Summit (LMS) 2024 event at Hotel Sultan, Jakarta, early October.
Rahayu said it is important for journalists to always verify the source of information, and avoid the spread of fake news that can be exacerbated by algorithms.
She also suggested the need for training on the ethics of using technology, as well as collaborating with technology experts to understand the implications of using these tools. Because that way, the media that produces journalistic products can still be trusted in providing information.
"By studying ethics and technology, the press can maintain the integrity and public trust in the midst of existing challenges," she said.
Moreover, Rahayu underlined that the current state of society also likes to use of the internet to spread and receive information. Therefore, she said the public needs to be given understanding of media literacy, including how to distinguish between valid information and hoaxes. This education could help people to become critical consumers of information.
Lastly, Ninik Rahayu also reminded the press to always be transparent about the source of their information and the coverage process. "If (media) using information from the internet, it is mandatory to include a clear and reliable source," she said.
