TheIndonesia.id - Indonesia is known as one of the largest palm oil-producing countries in the world. Considering its vastness with 34 provinces, however, which provinces are the producers of this commodity?
The largest palm oil-producing areas in Indonesia are located on the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan. These two islands are supported by a tropical climate that supports oil palm cultivation.

1. Riau
Riau Province is estimated to have about 2,806,349 hectares (6,934,639 acres) of oil palm land. With such a large area, the area produces as much as 9.5 million tons of palm oil annually.
2. West Kalimantan
This area has been planted with oil palm since the 1980s and is mostly managed by PTPN XIII. The area of oil palm plantations in West Kalimantan reached 1,570,675 hectares (3,881,222 acres) in 2019 and produced at least 5.2 million tonnes of palm oil annually.
3. North Sumatra
The area of oil palm plantations in North Sumatra is estimated to reach 1,773,049 hectares (4,381,299 acres) in 2019. This area has increased quite significantly compared to 2016 which only reached 1,342,523 hectares. Oil palm plantations in North Sumatra could produce more than 5.6 million tonnes of palm oil in 2019.
4. Central Kalimantan
In 2021, the area of oil palm plantations in Central Kalimantan will be recorded at 2,049,790 hectares (5,065,141 acres). These plantations produced 7.6 million tonnes of palm oil in 2019.
5. South Sumatra
South Sumatra has an oil palm plantation area of up to 1,215,476 hectares (3,003,506 acres) in 2021. The total weight produced by oil palm plantations in this region reached 4 million tons of palm oil in 2019.
