Ramos Horta Renominates NU-Muhammadiyah for the Nobel Peace Prize

TheIndonesia.id - The President of Timor Leste, José Ramos Horta, nominated Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah as candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize because these two organizations played an important role in promoting peace. Last year, Ramos-Horta also promoted these two Islamic organizations but failed.

"These two organizations are very deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize. I have seen that NU and Muhammadiyah have always played a very important role in promoting peace," said Ramos Horta when giving a press statement after a friendly visit at the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Building, Jakarta, Wednesday, July 20, 2022.

NU General Chair K.H. Yahya Cholil Staquf appreciated the nomination plan. It is an honor as well as an extraordinary moment for NU as the largest Islamic organization in the world.

Previously, in 2021, said Gus Yahya, President Ramos Horta who was the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate in 1996, nominated NU for the Nobel Peace Prize. "As we know before that President Ramos Horta has nominated NU for the Nobel Peace Prize last year and he wants to nominate it again. This is an honor for all of us," he said.

In addition, continued Gus Yahya, President Ramos Horta also nominated NU to join the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and become a candidate for the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity. The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity is an independent global award that recognizes individuals or organizations that make major contributions to human progress and peaceful living.

President Ramos Horta and his entourage arrived at the PBNU Building at around 09.05 WIB. During his visit, which was a friendly visit between Timor Leste and PBNU, Horta was greeted directly by Gus Yahya and NU Secretary General Saifullah Yusuf.

They entered the PBNU Building to hold a closed meeting. During the closed-door meeting, several things were discussed, such as the plan for cooperation between Timor Leste and PBNU to organize religious and humanitarian activities. In addition, PBNU also invited Timor Lester to attend the Religion of Twenty (G20) meeting in Bali on November 2 and 3.
