Trunyan is considered the best horror spot in Bali, even in Indonesia. This presents a wind grave where corpses just lie without being buried in the ground. The tourists also see the sight of rows of human skulls, bones, and their favorite belongings during their lives.
Doesn't the corpse stink? Not in Trunyan! This is because of the existence of the Taru Menyan tree which means fragrant wood. The scent of the tree absorbs the stench caused by corpses, both new and elongated dead. But the uniqueness of the burial tradition does not only come from this Taru Menyan tree.
However, some conditions must be met if somebody wants to be buried in this place. There are three types of graves according to the condition of the person who died, namely:
· Sema Muda is a special burial place for babies and children.
· Sema Wayah for the funeral of adults who died naturally.
· Sema Bantas is dedicated to those who died due to other reasons such as accidents, etc.
Not everyone can get a mapasah or burial in Trunyan's grave. There are only 11 places for 11 bodies. If the old body is full, it must be moved to another place so that the new body can be occupied. The bodies of the newly deceased will be "buried" in one of the tombs in the form of a woven bamboo fence that is plugged into the ground called ancak.
By the way, the Taru Menyan tree has been growing in this village for about eleven centuries. That is why the village and the cemetery were given the name Trunyan (short for Taru Menyan). Trunyan is one of the oldest villages on the Island of God.
