TheIndonesia.id - A 2.5-year-old baby elephant died in Surabaya Zoo, but management has yet to reveal the cause of death. A spokesperson, however, confirmed the animal died just a few days ago.
Representative of Surabaya Zoo Agus Supangkat told the press on Saturday, December 18, that Dumbo, the name of baby elephant, died only very recently.
“About two days ago,” Supangkat explained in Surabaya.
However, he refused to reveal the details or cause of death and asked the public to wait for official confirmation that will soon be released.
The zoo management is currently waiting for findings from necropsy performed on the body before being able to release any official statement.
Previously, it was reported that a baby elephant whose name was given by former Surabaya mayor Tri Rismaharini, died in Surabaya Zoo.
Commission B deputy chair at Surabaya Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) Anas Karno has called for zoo management to be more transparent and immediately reveal the cause of death to the public.
“KBS [Surabaya Zoo] belongs to Surabaya regional government which means that its assets belong to the people of Surabaya.”
He added the Council will summon KBS’s management to explain its operational, including the standard of treatment and care.
“There are several things we’d like to know, like whether the treatments are according to standards and how [management ensures] nutrition for the animals,” Karno said.
