Wuling Launches Premiere Production of Indonesian-made Air EV

TheIndonesia.id - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto launched the premiere production of Indonesian-made Wuling Air EV to support the development of battery-based electric vehicles (EV) and expedite the net-zero emissions target achievement.

"It is expected that Indonesian citizens can utilize battery vehicles or electric vehicles that have an affordable price," he said in an official statement issued on Monday, August 8, 2022.

"The existence of this EV is expected to realize net-zero emissions, and when more cities use EV, the level of environmental pollution will continue to decline," he added.

According to Bloomberg data, the potential demand for electric vehicles is estimated to continue to grow and reach around 55 million units by 2040.

To seize this opportunity and support the Conference of Parties’ agenda on climate change (COP21), Indonesia has issued Presidential Regulation No. 55 of 2019 on accelerating battery-based electric vehicles (KBL-BB)/BEV for road transportation.

The government has also expedited the development of renewable energy infrastructure and the electric vehicle industry through the National Automotive Industry Road Map and KBL-BB Industry Development Road Map.

Hartarto visited PT SAIC General Motors Wuling (SGMW) Motor Indonesia, Cikarang, West Java, to inspect the Wuling factory’s general assembly and observe the vehicle production process.

The minister also took a Wuling Air EV for a test drive.

He said he expects that the company, which has been around for seven years in Indonesia, will be the leading electric vehicle producer across Indonesia.

"With investment worth US$1 billion, 10 thousand employees, and 60 hectares area, this has also become one of the bases for Indonesia's automotive exports," he remarked.

10,000 Units

Wuling Motors Indonesia targets 10,000 units assembled per year at their factory facility located at Greendland International Industrial Center, Deltamas, Cikarang, West Java. "The electric vehicle that we launched today is the latest battery-based electric vehicle developed by Wuling for the world. And Indonesia is the first launch site," said Shi Guoyong.

“We have brought the latest technology to Indonesia and in order to be able to adapt the strategy and implementation of global energy savings and emission reductions. And of course it will also drive major changes throughout the Indonesian automotive industry chain, starting from product research and development, manufacturing, critical components, consumers and so on," he stated.

Wuling Motors Brand & Marketing Director Dian Asmahani said that the Wuling Air ev is planned to produce 10,000 units this year and also in 2023. This production capacity will meet the domestic market and will also be exported to several countries in the world in the future.

"Indonesia is the production base for right-hand drive in the world. We are still exploring for export and indeed several countries have expressed interest in marketing this Wuling Air EV," she explained.

Furthermore, Asmahani said that Wuling Air ev would be officially launched at GIIAS 2022 on August 11. Complete specifications and prices will also be announced at the international automotive exhibition.

However, Asmahani explained that this car can be easily charged. Wuling Air ev can be charged with a plug at home with a power of 2200 watts.

In addition to Wuling Air EV, the latest KBL-BB developed by Wuling was also unveiled on Monday. The product has been confirmed to be the official vehicle for the G20 Summit in Bali.
