TheIndonesia.co - A student at Hasanuddin University in Makassar, South Sulawesi, was kicked out of a student orientation event after introducing themselves as nonbinary.
In a video circulating online, a new student is understood to be ordered by a lecturer to leave the orientation program after identifying as nonbinary, instead of man or woman.
Some viewers regretted that campus authorities saw it necessary to remove the student.
According to United Kingdom-based LGBTQ+ rights organization Stonewall, nonbinary is an “umbrella term for people whose gender identity doesn’t sit comfortably with ‘man’ or ‘woman’”.

Non-binary identities are varied, and they can include people who identify with some aspects of binary identities, while others reject them entirely.
Stonewall also noted that in regards to promoting the use of inclusive language, it is worth reminding that “not everyone is comfortable with gendered titles such as ‘Ms’ or ‘Mr’.” Therefore, whenever titles are necessary, it is always considered a good idea to provide alternative ones, such as ‘Mx’ (pronounced mix or mux).
