TheIndonesia.id - Shin Tae-yong has officially parted ways with the Indonesian football team, as announced by the All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) on Monday.

According to Antara News Agency, PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir stated that the separation was amicable, with the South Korean coach accepting the decision with understanding. "Our relationship is good. I have great respect for Shin Tae-yong, and he accepted this decision very well," Thohir shared in a press release.

The decision to end the collaboration was first considered three months prior to Indonesia's match against China on October 15, 2024. While Thohir had initially thought about terminating the contract earlier, the tight schedule in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifications led to a delay.

Thohir did not specify a direct replacement but revealed that the new head coach will be from the Netherlands, tasked with guiding Indonesia to the 2026 World Cup.

"Several figures in the football world are looking for more than just a job; they seek to leave a legacy, especially being part of Indonesia's journey to the 2026 World Cup," he remarked.

During a trip to Europe in December 2024, Thohir met with three coaching candidates, ultimately narrowing it down to one individual. The new head coach will be revealed to the public in a press conference on January 12.

Shin Tae-yong joined the Indonesian national team in December 2019 and played a pivotal role in improving the team's FIFA ranking from 173rd to 127th. In mid-2024, his contract was extended until 2027 after he led the Indonesian U-23 team to the semifinals of the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup.

In his farewell message, Shin expressed his hopes for Indonesia's successful qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
