TheIndonesia.id - In an era where digital technology plays a crucial role in everyday life, the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture has emphasized the importance of teachers and parents mastering digital literacy to help educate children effectively.

According to Antara News Agency, Woro Srihastuti Sulistyaningrum, the ministry’s Deputy for Family Quality Improvement and Population, made this statement during an event held in Jakarta on Wednesday to mark Safer Internet Day 2025.

“We must work together to take concrete steps in creating a digital environment that is safe and child-friendly,” Sulistyaningrum said during her speech. She highlighted the vital role both parents and teachers play in guiding children in the digital world, urging them to foster better communication with children regarding online safety.

Despite the growing reliance on the internet, Sulistyaningrum pointed out that less than 40% of parents possess sufficient knowledge to guide their children in using the internet safely. This lack of understanding, she noted, underscores the need for continuous education and awareness among adults.

She also stressed the importance of enhancing the monitoring systems already in place, acknowledging that although these systems exist, they have not been communicated effectively to all stakeholders.

“While the internet can have negative effects, it also provides numerous positive opportunities,” she continued. Highlighting research from the Human Development Research Center at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Sulistyaningrum pointed out that digital devices and the internet can positively impact children's cognitive development. She emphasized that children can broaden their knowledge, enhance their creativity, and improve their communication skills through responsible internet use.

Moreover, Sulistyaningrum reiterated that ensuring digital security is a shared responsibility. It is not just up to individuals, but requires cooperation among families, communities, and the government. “Collaboration from all sectors — both governmental and non-governmental — is essential to creating a digital space that is healthier, safer, and more supportive for our children,” she added.

In response to increasing concerns about the risks posed by digital platforms to children, the Indonesian government is already working swiftly to draft regulations aimed at making the digital space safer for children. This includes proposals to set age restrictions for accessing various digital platforms.
