TheIndonesia.co - Culture Minister Fadli Zon has expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the Makassar city government, particularly Mayor Danny Pomanto, in revitalizing the Phinisi schooner, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage.
"I highly appreciate what Mayor Danny Pomanto has done in bringing the Pinisi ship back to life. It's no longer just a story but a responsibility since it’s now part of the UNESCO World Heritage," Fadli Zon stated in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Thursday, according to Antara News Agency.
Fadli Zon, who was in Sulawesi for a series of activities, emphasized that the Phinisi schooner, as a UNESCO World Heritage, must be preserved and maintained. He also noted that its preservation, development, and utilization have contributed to the growth of cultural economy and the cultural industry. "The downstream impact is extraordinary for tourism," he stated.
With the Phinisi schooner and other supporting facilities, Fadli Zon expressed confidence that Makassar's tourism will continue to thrive. He added that the presence of several Phinisi schooner at Losari Beach, which serve as tourist attractions, also strengthens the region's cultural appeal.

"I am confident that this will become an attractive destination for tourists, and its cultural content is strong. Moreover, Phinisi schooner is now a World Heritage," he remarked.
Meanwhile, Mayor Ramdhan Pomanto of Makassar felt honored to host Minister Fadli Zon aboard the city’s Phinisi schooner. He reiterated that it is the city's duty to preserve South Sulawesi's cultural heritage, such as the Pinisi ship, to ensure that its cultural value is passed on to future generations. "If culture doesn't transcend time, it loses its meaning," he said.
Previously, the Makassar city government, through the Department of Tourism, launched two Phinisi Schooners in December 2023: the Adama and Tungguma ships. Additionally, the government introduced the Toraja traditional house, Tongkonan, at the MNEK CPI area, turning it into a historical and educational tourist destination for the people of South Sulawesi, students, and visitors.
Mayor Pomanto also hosted a dinner for Minister Fadli Zon aboard the Phinisi schooner while enjoying the scenic coastal view.
